Text
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN I, Thomas Matthew McCartney, born in the island of St. Vincent, residing at, Sangre Grande, in the island of Trinidad, being the brother of Reginald Augustus Mcartney deceased, do declare that Harry Alston McCartney was theson of Reginald Augustus McCartney and was my nephew. The reason for the difference in names is because of a mistake made long ago in the spelling of the name of my father Thomas Edward McCartney until he was in his middle age. His father had emigrated to the island of St. Vincent from the United Kingdom and died at an early age . His son, Thomas Edward Matthew (my father) was brought up by an Aunt who might have taught him to spell his name McArtney. By Accident an inheritance was found lying in Chancery in the U.K. naming him as next of kin. It was then determined that he was spelling his name wrongly. He promptly changed to the correct way as did all of his children except Reginald Augustus (father of Harry Alston) who was by that time a young man. Why Harry Alston decided to be known as McCartney must be that he had been told the story and decided to change to the correct spelling as his grandfather and uncles had done.
