Montserrat - early history. Original manuscript c1940s, auth: George Ignatius Rodrigues Mendes, Montserrat, West Indies

An original manuscript recording the early history of the Island of Montserrat (1688 to about 1700s) authored by GIR Mendes recently became available. It was written, probably progressively during the 1930s. He presents an account of early social, economic, political and military events during a tumultous early period of the island's colonisation. His analysis draws heavily on historic acts of various English soverigns and the English parliament.

The manuscript ends abruptly at the end of chapter 8, its likely that these pages had been temporarily mislaid, a small number of carbon copies of the document were made at the time and held by Mendes family members. Should they be traced some time in the future they will be incorporated into this document.
